The Wood Element ()

점박사 편집팀 · 수정일

Wood (木) is the energy of spring and trees — the drive to grow upward.

What the Wood () energy means

In the Five Elements, Wood (木) is the spring energy of a seed pushing through the soil and rising. Once a direction is set it grows straight, with strong momentum to start and expand. Wood is good at making plans and opening new ground, but when the urge to grow runs too strong it can turn impatient or take on everything alone. Wood grows with the help of Water (水), expresses itself through Fire (火), takes root in Earth (土), and is shaped by Metal (金).

Traits when Wood is strong

  • Clear sense of direction and drive
  • Strong at starting and expanding
  • Upright and honest by nature

Things to watch

The urge to grow can run ahead into impatience, or lead to carrying everything alone until worn out.

Relationships with the other elements (generating · controlling)

  • Generating (相生)Wood (木) grows with the help of Water (水), and gives rise to Fire (火).
  • Controlling (相克)Wood (木) is controlled by Metal (金), and controls Earth (土).
  • A saju chart is read as the balance of these five energies helping and checking one another. A strong element is not good or bad in itself — the harmony of the whole is what matters.
